M. BUTTERFLY won the Tony Award, Outer Critics Circle Drama Award and the Drama Desk Award for best play. Based on a true story, it follows a Chinese opera actor/government spy(male) who fooled his French Diplomat lover for 20 years into believing that the performer was in fact a woman. This is the play that introduced B. D. Wong to wider audiences and won him a Tony Award.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
SONG LILING -- Asian male, 20's to early 30's to play Chinese Opera star and government spy. Capable of cutting cynicism, incisive wit, passive femininity, seductiveness, and great strength. Believable physically as a woman when in Kimono or dress and make up and wig, competent singer, dance background or move well, must be comfortable with full nudity and with kissing another man. RENE GALLIMARD -- white male late 30's to 50's, self effacing, well spoken, likeable, vulnerable, comfortable kissing both men and women. 'RENE' SIDES: CLICK HERE CLICK HERE
KUROGO -- Asain men, athletic, experienced in stage movement or dance to play performers/dancer in Chinese Opera and also to be soldiers in Chinese army. Mostly non-speaking roles but excellent stage action.
MARC -- late 30's to 40's, male naturally charming and flirtatious (in that stereotypical "French lover" mode), in-bred elegance and confidence bespeaking upper class. MARC SIDES: CLICK HERE
RENEE/GIRL IN MAGAZINE - 20's, white, attractive, sexy, student, very smart, spirited, a bit spoiled, direct, opinionated, sexually liberated. This actor must be comfortable with nudity or semi-nudity as she plays a fantasy woman from a 'girly magazine.' RENEE SIDES: CLICK HERE
COMRADE CHIN/SUZUKI -- Asian woman, 30's to 40's (will consider younger and older), Chinese community party official, enforcer of Moaist beliefs, cynical, commanding, humorous, powerful, capable of both frieghtening bombast and chilling stillness. CHIN/SUZUKI SIDES: CLICK HERE CLICK HERE
